Dinky Toys #166: Sunbeam Rapier

Two-Tone 1950 Model

Released in 1958 and issued up to 1963

  • Dinky Toys, Meccano LTD
  • Made in England
  • 1/48 approximate scale, called ‘1/43’ usually
  • Two tone paint job
  • Turquise upper half with a dark blue lower part
  • Light blue cast hubs on wheels
  • Don’t know if tires are original, but they are supple and intact.
  • Sedan with cast body and cast wheels, black tires, black sheet metal base with number, windows, silver grill, bumpers, headlights and tail lights
  • Note that this model was first made in England, but a later release was also made in France

This is a splendid looking Dinky release of a Sunbeam Rapier, a company in the Rootes Brothers family of firms that ceased production in 1976. The Sunbeam Rapier is an automobile produced by Rootes Group from 1955 until 1976, in two different generations

Please see the photographs for a complete description of this vintage toy.

Please examine the photographs carefully and ask any questions you may have regarding the condition of this vintage toy:

  • It appears to me that at some point this toy was refurbished in a very professional way; I can tell that the tin plate black base has been painted black and that the rivets are not the original.
  • The painting is so well done that I’m just not sure whether it’s original or not.
  • Gorgeous glazing inside.
  • Chrome bits very nice

This model displays splendidly! I have another Rapier in two-tone yellow, and they displayed so well together, but my wife insists I cut down. So there.

Thank you for looking; we have many other vintage toys available!
