The 40 Series, the third generation of the Land Cruiser, was sold for 24 years from 1960, making it the number one longest-selling model in Japanese domestic history. It was highly regarded not only in Japan but also overseas as a reliable cross-country 4WD, and it is a model that has increased its global recognition. The chassis was carried over from the second generation, and there were four types of wheelbases: short, middle, long, and super long, mainly for overseas markets. The body was also available in soft top, hardtop, pickup truck, and cab, boasting a wide variety of variations to suit the usage environment. At its debut, the engine was only a 3.8-liter inline-six gasoline engine, but in 1974, Japan's first 3-liter inline-four diesel engine (overseas, the 3.6-liter inline-six diesel was the first) was added. In addition to its high economy, it was possible to register it as a 4-number small truck, which expanded individual demand in addition to the previous corporate demand. Sales increased dramatically. After that, major improvements were made in 1979 and 1980, and the commercial vehicle-like color faded, and it continued to evolve into a comfortable and powerful 4WD that kept pace with the times.
